Nate Mack Family,
I want to start off by saying that I miss you all very much. I spent last week trying to figure out what would be the resources to share with you and compiled a list. Please note that this list is going to grow as I find more cool resources. This document can be found in the Nate Mack Suggested Academic Plan, under Creative Time/ARTS section. I want to bring your attention to the Month of Musical Missions. This file was created by Ms. Gargantos, a music teacher in CCSD, with some help from me! We are challenging you to move, listen, sing, play, and create using different themes. You will notice that this is a 6 week challenge over 30 days. Print this page out so you can cross out the challenges you've completed and see how many you can do! I really love this challenge and I'm going to be doing the same. *To access the links, just click on the file from your computer!* I would love to hear from everyone on how they are doing. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. If you log into CCSD Gmail account, you will be able to type in Joo Sin and find me right away. Love, Ms. J

Welcome to music!
My name is Ms. Joo Sin but please call me Ms. J. In music, we focus on singing, playing, and moving to meet the four national standards of music: Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect. My goal is to meet those standards while creating a safe environment for everyone to share their musical talent. A teacher once told me that it is very rare that a child is tone-deaf. They may think they are tone-deaf, but in fact, their ears haven't been trained yet. I would like to apply the Growth Mindset to music. There may be students who don't like music class at all yet. There may be some students who like singing but not dancing. What matters in music is that we try to do things we are scared of and that we grow as musicians and as decent human beings. I am available to talk to individuals who are struggling. Please feel free to contact me. I'll be sharing more information later about our Orff Ensemble and different instruments students will be playing. Let's have a great year! I wanted to share with you a website I find useful when trying to find a new song to learn.
It is called Dr. Uke - www.doctoruke.com - and you can find songs, chord progressions to practice, and how to get started as a beginner. Click on the link above and click on "SONGS" tab. Go through the list to find a song you've always wanted to learn to play or search for "Octopus's Garden" if you've learned how to play it in music class this week. If you haven't, we will work on it next time! 4th and 5th graders who have turned in their contracts are working really hard on the ukuleles.
I thought I'd share the name of a touring artist who covers popular songs, as well as writes his own music. Jake Shimabukuro composes and arranges in various styles. You can look him up on YouTube and find a plethora of music and resources. His videos on basic strumming and chords are easy to understand and helpful. Here is a video of Jake Shimabukuro playing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Plkp8ufcTeE&disable_polymer=true Opera Las Vegas is putting on 3 free performances of Jack and the Beanstalk this weekend.
Friday, April 5 - 4 pm at Clark County Library 1401 E. Flamingo Road Saturday, April 6 - 2 pm at Windmill Library 7060 W. Windmill Lane Sunday, April 7 - 2 pm at Whitney Library 5175 E. Tropicana Avenue Please see the flyer for more information. Through generous grant, we have been able to purchase 8 brand new ukuleles for our 4th and 5th graders to use!
Ukulele unit will start next week, so stay tuned! Students will be given a contract this week. The contract must be returned to Ms. J before students are allowed to touch a ukulele. My name is Ms. Joo Sin and I am so excited to start off another year.
This year, we will continue to sing, dance, and play to get our creative juices flowing. Nevada Department of Education is planning on adopting a new set of standards for music, modeled after the national standards. The four main strands are create, perform, respond, and connect. I sure hope students are ready to do all of the above. There are five rules in music class: Make good choices Use kind words Show respect Involve yourself Care for our room and instruments To help students remind themselves and to reward them, I will be using red cards and green cards this year. The green cards are reserved for exceptional students to celebrate their successes. These cards will be used to pick an activity, an instrument, or a any other tools we may use in music. The red cards are used as reminders or warnings. After one verbal warning, if students continue to exhibit behaviors that are against the MUSIC rules, they will receive a red card. If they receive another red card at any point they come to music, they will receive another red card and a citation. If you have any questions about the rules or the use of Red/Green cards and citations, please feel free to ask me. Hope to see you at the Open House on Thursday, August 16th! Come to McDonald's on Tuesday, Oct. 25th, and be served by your specialists!
Food, raffle, and fun... What more do you need for dinner? If you are not yet in 3rd grade but you always wanted a recorder, this is your chance to win one! Raffle prizes include recorders, art supplies, jump rope, and more! When? Tuesday Oct. 25th 5-7 pm Where? McDonald's 2217 N Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89014 See you there!
